Bayesian Exposure Assessment Toolkit

Updated 2026-03-25
BEAT is a probabilistic task-based model, mainly used for exposure assessment for biocides. The basic idea behind the approach is to compare the process information given by the assessor with the data present in the database. The model integrates expert judgment and objective measurements by means of different elements: a Bayesian framework, a rule base (expert judgment), a database with dermal exposure measurements (biocidal products) and contextual information. The rule base is an algorithm describing the similarity between exposure scenarios present in the database and the process described by the assessor, according to similarities in relevant dermal exposure determinants. The Bayesian framework provides an exposure estimate for the process described based on all data selected through the rule base. It also provides an estimate of the uncertainty of this estimation. BEAT contains worked examples for all 23 biocide product types.
