RiskOfDerm model

Updated 2026-03-25
RiskOfDerm is a model developed for estimating potential dermal exposure, i.e., the total amount of a substance coming into contact with protective clothing, work clothing, and exposed skin. The model is based on the conceptual model for dermal exposure (Schneider et al., 1999). RiskOfDerm clusters occupational activities in six Dermal Exposure Operation units (DEO units). The main aim of the DEO units is to cluster dermal exposure situations with similar routes and sources of exposure and similar (expected) relations between exposure determinants and exposure levels. For each of the DEO units a separate model was created in which determinants of dermal exposure were included based on their relevance according to statistical analysis of the measurement data in the RiskOfDerm database gathered in the project.

Project
The RISKOFDERM project was funded by the European Commission (project QLK4-CT-1999-01107)
Remarks
Developed for regulatory purposes and practical use in occupational settings. The RiskOfDerm model is mentioned in the REACH Guidance on Information Requirements and Chemical Safety Assessment - Chapter R.14: Occupational exposure assessment. The model is not suitable for very volatiles substances. The model has not been validated with an external dataset.
